about this site

legal - how to use the pictures

camera information

This is actually three sites in one.

The primary site will be my photography.

I have taken over 11,500 pictures so far.  Not all of these pictures are worthy of a look so it may take me a while to go through them and decide which ones would be the most enjoyable.  They are from Alaska, Maine, Canada, Florida and miscellaneous shots some just for the fun of it and people.

The 2nd part of the site will be about Science.

I have always been interested in science as long as I can remember.  I used to ask "why" for almost everything and never out grew it.  The more I kept asking and looking I figured out that there could actually be an answer (to and/or for) the questions.  As a little kid some of the questions I had were easy to answer.  Then some of the questions little kids ask adults - well most adults have given up trying to answer, well at least most adults have given up or have forgotten or never asked.  Maybe most of you haven't forgotten the questions but just need a good reason to start thinking again.  If that's the case then give me a call.

It still seems that some of the answers are hard to come by but for another reason.  I feel that most people that are "experts" and know about a subject don’t want to talk too much about it because it seems they want to keep it to themselves.  If they tell the full truth (answer the question) about what they know they will loose the “power” or elitist feeling that they have.  Everyone please tell the truth.  If you know a lot about something then your an expert.  I do know that no everyone feels that way but sometimes its been hard to remember what it was like not to know something.  I like to use the approach that you may not know something and that you are able to understand it so...

Anyhow my goal with this site is to try to bring 40 years of life experiences in the pursuit of the answers to the question, why?  I don't want to hold out on the subjects so I guess this may just show how much I don't know.  My Mom and I were talking about this and basically you have all been learning what you have been learning all your life.  I want to teach you all that I have learned.  So your all going to be smarter than me.

The 3rd part of the site will be about me

and some of the things that influence me.  How I spend my time working on my pursuits.  I hope to show that what I find interesting and worthy of pursuit can influence the positive and true direction.  I also hope you will share with me some complementary and contrasting insights you might have.  One quote at least from Andromeda "Pessimism is not a survival trait".

INSTRUCTIONS kind of.

The pictures on this site are full resolution pictures that were converted to jpeg format from their original .x3f file format from the camera.

What to do? YOU'RE BROWSER WILL NOT DISPLAY THESE IN FULL ON YOUR SCREEN this is not a problem!  I want you to have the file in the highest quality.  Since you just looked at the picture on you web browser that means the picture is on your computer!  Right click on the picture then save as and make a file on your desktop then save all the pictures there.  If you want you can right click and copy the "thumbnails" and copy them to an email attachment and send them to someone just don't forget where to tell them the originals came from.  One word of caution if you send a full size shot or you have received one you can't be sure it was an original its also possible that your e-mail program may have changed the picture size or quality, so if you want to be sure download it here for yourself.

You should COPY THE PICTURE TO A FILE.  You do this by right clicking on the picture and then select Copy and it will allow you to choose a File to copy it to.  You might make a new file on your desk top and put the picture files there.  You probably  already have a Picture viewer on your computer and that program will allow you to view the pictures anyway you want to.  That way you can see them in full on your computer but will also be able to resize them so you can look at them up close or from away.

-just part of legal-

AFTER YOU’VE DOWNLOADED MY PICTURES – HAVE YOU JUST VIOLATED MY COPYRIGHT????? Well at this time I’m not putting on any watermarks on the pictures.  PLEASE CONSIDER THAT THEY ARE COPYRIGHTED.  I do have the high resolution original that would allow me to prove it was mine.  I’m just going to use the honor system if you feel that you’re enjoying them and want to show your gratitude then I would appreciate it.  At this time that means that you'll have to call me.  I have not set up e-mail on this site yet.  Later I will have the ability to take a credit card or just a thanks.

If you use any of these for commercial use then I expect you will show your professional respect.  You should contact me for arrangements!

CAMERA INFORMATION - Sigma SD-9 with 10plus megapixels

I seriously don't know all of the capabilities of the Photoreceptor in this camera. I am choosing to use the chip to allow us to see the world with as much detail as it can with a slight attempt to make the shot more appealing to human eyes - at least mine.

These pictures were taken with a camera with a slight difference from other digital cameras it has a chip that records a value for every pixel location.  Because the a chip that records the image needs no program to decide what color it is, I have tried to leave the most information in the picture for the most detail.  I haven't changed much of the color level or adjusted the contrast or shadow except to a slight degree or to in some cases make the picture usable (some low light situations).  Again I want to give you the most detail in the picture.  These pictures are records in time.

These pictures have been enhanced only to bring the detail and allow you to make the adjustments you may need for what ever use you may want.

I do have the original files (pictures) in their original format (sigma .x3f).  At some time in the future I may be ready to share those files.  The camera is a Sigma SD-9 it uses a Foveon chip that works more like film in that it records what it see’s.  The chip has effectively over 10 megapixels.  The camera comes with its own software to view the pictures in the original format the software is a free download from Sigma.

If your video monitor was able to display these pictures in full resolution then the picture would be about as large as about 6 monitors, nobody has one that big!  This should allow you to scale the pictures down but still get the most information from them!  If you plan to print them then you will want them full size - HI resolution.  SO COPY THE FULL FILE TO YOUR COMPUTER = READ LEGAL ABOVE!  Some of these pictures look very interesting when you view them at full resolution (actual pixels)

Thank you,

Jay Thompson
